Blastocystis hominis - Cyst- TEM. A multilayered cyst wall surrounds the cell which is 3.7- 5 microns wide. Lipid-like and glycogen inclusions are present in the condensed cytoplasm. Mitochondria have an electron-opaque matrix and few cristae. This is the form thought to the transmissible stage which survives in the external environment protected by the cyst wall.
